You will love this flavorful Cilantro Lime Hummus that doesn’t require a food processor!

Cilantro Lime Hummus - No food processor required!

I’m so excited to be the April Mystery Dish guest today! Mystery Dish is a group of bloggers who take turns each month choosing a list of foods, and everyone has to make a surprise dish using 2-3 ingredients from the list.

Every month there is one guest blogger who gets to join in the fun, and I’m thrilled that Jen from Yummy Healthy Easy picked me! Here is the list of ingredients Jen put in her mystery box: Garbanzo beans, eggs, flaxseed, cilantro, potatoes (any variety), bread, quinoa, lime, popcorn, dark chocolate, ground turkey, and asparagus.

After much back and forth, I latched onto the garbanzo beans and decided to make Cilantro Lime Hummus. You’re going to love it!!

When I first made this recipe, I didn’t have a food processor and made it with a mortar and pestle. That worked fine, but it created a chunkier dip. If you don’t have a food processor either, you that you can still make a delicious batch of hummus!

Cilantro Lime Hummus - No food processor required!

I read that the earliest recipes for hummus date back to the 13th century, and I’m pretty sure they didn’t have KitchenAids back then! If you happen to have a mortar and pestle, you can use that to mash the garbanzo beans for this chunky hummus. If you don’t have one, you can mash them on a large plate with a fork or potato masher.

You know me and spicy food (love it!), so I couldn’t resist adding diced jalapeño to this recipe. I also stirred in a little Greek yogurt to add creaminess without using additional oil. This chunky hummus was good on pita, but next time I think I will eat it with tortilla chips instead!

Cilantro Lime Hummus

This chunky hummus recipe does not require a food processor!

  • Total Time: 15 minutes
  • Yield: 4 1x

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 16 ounces can garbanzo beans drained
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/4 cup fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt or to taste
  • 1/4 cup greek yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons cilantro finely chopped
  • 1 jalapeño seeds and ribbed removed, finely chopped (optional)
  • pita bread or tortilla chips for dipping

Instructions

  1. Add half the beans, 1 tbsp. olive oil, and 2 tbsp. lime juice to a mortar and pestle. Smash beans until as smooth as possible, but some chunks of beans left behind are OK. (You can also do this on a large plate with a fork or potato masher if you don’t have a mortar and pestle.)
  2. Transfer mashed beans to a medium bowl, and repeat step one with remaining beans. Stir together mashed beans and yogurt. If hummus seems too thick at this point, add a little water a tablespoon at a time to get your desired consistency.
  3. Stir in cilantro, salt, and jalapeño. Adjust lime and salt to taste. Serve with pita or chips.

Ok, that mortar is just awesome!

We are so glad to have you this month Andi, I knew you would come up with an awesome dish and this is definitely it! I can’t wait to try this, I love the tex-mex flavor you went with and the greek yogurt addition! I haven’t had hummus without tahini paste before so I’m intrigued! :) Pinned… great recipe girl!

Thank you for having me, Krista!! I’m sort of sad that I could only be the guest for one month because it was really fun! I’m really glad you like the recipe, and thanks for the pin :)

Thank you, Melanie! I’m glad you like the recipe I came up with. I was afraid making hummus was too obvious, so I’m glad no one else made the same.

I love that you made this without a food processor, Andi! I mean, I have one, but I detest washing it…ugh. I love hummus, too, so this recipe is getting pinned. That mystery dish challenge sounds like so much fun. :)

Thank you, Marcie! Mystery Dish was fun, and I’m kinda sad I only got to do it for one month! I was just saying in my last comment that I might get a food processor, but now you are making me rethink it! Are they a pain to wash? I figured most of the parts could go in the dishwasher. I buy a ton of shredded cheese, and someone said they shred theirs in the food processor and save a bunch of money that way. That might be enough of a draw for me!

I would love to do a mystery dish — maybe we need to start another one?

I was thinking just the same thing when I replied to your comment, Marcie! I’ll email you :)

Sounds good! Also, my reply on the good processor didn’t show up. As much as I hate washing it, I need it for almond butter, pie dough, and grating carrots. I definitely couldn’t get along without it!

Wow Andi, I am super impressed that you made such a delicious and creamy hummus with a mortar and pestle! I make a weekly batch with my food processor and sometimes it doesn’t even come out that smooth – way to go lady :) I love the cilantro and lime in here too – it sounds so refreshing and of course I love the kick from the jalapeño too! Pinning this for my next batch for sure :)

I bet yours is smoother, Kelly! I did mash those beans for a while though. I meant to say in my post that it was fun and a good stress reliever! I might break down and get a food processor soon though. Mother’s Day is coming up…

Yum, yum YUM! I love hummus and I love YOU! So happy that you did this with me this month! This post made me crack up – I can’t believe you don’t have a blender, food processor or even a grill but that you have a mortar and pestle! LOL! I am going to have to give this hummus a try…beautiful pictures of course, my friend. Thanks again for doing this with me! Pinned!!

Thank you, Jen! I don’t remember why I have a mortar and pestle, and I hardly ever use it! I think I got it years ago when I was really into Alton Brown, and he insisted that grinding your own spices was better. I should trade that and my waffle iron in for a food processor! Who needs a grill when you’ve got an iron skillet? ;) Thank you again for inviting me! This was so fun!

I LOVE the flavors going on in this hummus! It’s perfect for Cinco de Mayo festivities! I also love simple, and this recipe is just that. Pinned!

Thank you so much, Justine! It would be fun to have a bowl of hummus squeezed between the guacamole and salsa at a Cinco de Mayo party. I think it would fit right in :)

Andi

Do you make it often or buy it? I usually buy it, but now I might make it more because this version was different but good too! Thank you for stopping by, Tanya! I’m sorry I’m so behind on commenting lately, but I always love to see what you are cooking and pin and put you in roundups as often as I can. Hope you are doing well!

I just cooked up a huge batch of chickpeas last night and now I know what I’m doing with them. Yum! A piece of our food processor once broke and it took us several years to get around to fixing it recently. Now I can’t imagine why I took so long- I use it almost everyday! But there is something to be said for going it old school. I think a mortar and pestle may be the only kitchen gadget I don’t own :)

Andi

Do you cook them from dry beans? I can’t think of ever seeing dry chickpeas at my grocery store, but now I’ll have to look. Maybe Whole Foods will have them. You guys are all convincing me that I should get a food processor. I might invest in one soon. Thanks so much for your visit and comment!

Yummm! I almost bought that mortar at home goods but didn’t. Now I wish I did lol! I love the cilantro and lime addition to hummus. Sounds so delicious

You are the second friend who has mentioned Home Goods. We don’t have that around here that I know of, and now I wish we did! I have had that mortar and pestle for years, and I think it came from Crate and Barrel. I hardly ever use it, so I need to find more recipes like this one. Thank you so much for coming over, Zainab!
