- 2.5 lb starchy potatoes
- 2 cup cream
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 cup gruyere cheese/ mozzarella
- 4 garlic cloves
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp pepper
- 2 tsp thyme leaves
- 1 tbsp oil
Instructions
- First of all, place the melted butter, cream, and garlic in a cup. Add the salt, pepper, and thyme leaves, too. Mix them all until well combined.
- Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F (both fan and standard ovens).
- Peel the potatoes and slice them 1/8″/3 mm thick. Also, you can use a slicer if you have one.
- Add and spread the oil to the baking dish.
- Next, spread 1/3 of the potatoes in the baking dish, then pour over 1/3 of the cream mixture.
- Sprinkle the first layer of potatoes with 3/4 cups cheese.
- Repeat for the 2nd and third layers.
- Cover the dish with a lid or foil, and bake for 1 hr 30 min or until the potatoes in the middle are soft (you can use a knife to test the tenderness of the potatoes).
- Extra final step: Remove foil, and top with an extra cheese layer. Bake for a further 10 to 15 minutes until golden and bubbly. Let them set 5 minutes before serving.
