Leftover Ham and Cheese Pizza

Easter has come and gone, but a ton of food remains! Try this leftover ham pizza to curb your appetite for something new!

Hi everyone! My name is Kacey and I am here today from my food blog, The Cookie Writer, to share with you something special just for Andi’s readers! I am so happy to be a contributor here at The Weary Chef, and I hope you love this leftover ham pizza as much as my family did.

After the holidays we often see a ton of leftover food. It is no wonder seeing as everyone brings something to the table (and prepares a dinner-sized portion of each item)! In our family, it is not uncommon to see a lot of ham hanging around. It is a cheap, versatile meat that speaks to many.

Personally, I think ham is great in split pea soup, but we wanted to take it a step further this time around. Seeing as I do not eat meat myself, it was only my husband and daughter trying to devour a 6.5 lb ham themselves. What was I to do with the herb crusted ham in the slow cooker after so many days of eating the same meal?! Well, my friends, say hello to this easy, leftover ham pizza!

I prefer making everything homemade (which includes the sauce and dough,) but I know many do not have the time for that. That’s why this recipe is so awesome! Store-bought pizza sauce and pizza dough work perfectly here, and all that is left for you to do is slice up your ham, a large onion, and some mozzarella cheese! Talk about quick and easy!

You can easily get creative with your toppings. While our leftover ham pizza only contained onions, I think a mix of bright peppers and mushrooms would work perfectly here. Basically, when I make pizza, I like to clean out my fridge with any veggies that need to be used up :) Who doesn’t love a new way to use up leftovers?! Oh! If you decide to go with store-bought dough to save time, remember to follow their instructions accordingly (but it really shouldn’t be too different than what I have listed.) I would love to have a pizza stone on hand, but my pizza pan works perfectly for our pizza nights :)

Modifications and Substitutions for Ham and Cheese Pizza

As is the case with any pizza recipe, you can always add whatever ingredients you like based on your personal preference. Here are some of my favorite additional toppings along with some substitutions you can make.

Additional Topping Suggestions:

  • Pineapple—yes, it is a classic pairing. It is not for everyone, but the sweet pineapple does go well with the salty ham. Plus, it is inexpensive and canned.
  • Black olives – another great canned option you can add to your pizza.
  • Jalapenos – I like pickled jalapenos and think they go particularly well with the ham and pineapple creating a sweet, spicy, salty combination.
  • Sundried tomatoes – these are another easy and very flavorful topping that requires no prep and they can last for months in the fridge.

Modifcations:

  • You can substitute fresh sliced mozzarella with shredded mozzarella cheese or a pizza cheese blend of shredded mozzarella, provolone, asiago and parmesan. You can even use a jack or cheddar cheese if you are in a pinch or have extra in your fridge.
  • You can substitute the red pizza sauce for a white or cream sauce or even a sauce of olive oil, minced garlic, and parmesan cheese.

This leftover ham pizza can be made using store-bought ingredients, but just remember to adjust cooking time accordingly to your dough’s instructions!

  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 4 1x

Ingredients

Scale

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 475F. Lightly dust your counter-top in flour.
  2. Using a rolling pin, roll out your pizza dough until desired size and thickness is reached. Carefully transfer to pizza pan and adjust accordingly.
  3. Spread your sauce to about 1-inch from the edge of the pizza dough. That uncovered part will be your crust. Evenly spread out the ham and onion. Finish off with mozzarella cheese.
  4. Place into oven and bake for 15-17 minutes, or until mozzarella cheese is nicely browned and crust is golden.
  5. Allow to cool slightly before cutting!

Yum! I think we are going to be freezing some of our ham leftovers (since we’ve been eating them for days)…this may have to go on the menu in a week or two when I am ready for more ham! It looks delicious!

What an great idea for using up leftover ham, Kacey! We eat pizza once a week and are always changing it up so that we don’t get bored…and I just happen to have a bunch of leftover ham hanging out in the fridge. Guess what’s going on the pizzas this week? ;)
