What Is Pound Cake?

The origins of pound cakes are in North Europe, date back to the early 18th century, and the term traditionally referred to a cake that weighed four pounds. So, the classic pound cake was made with 1 pound of each butter, eggs, sugar, and flour.

However, you can easily notice that using only these four ingredients the pound cake will be a little dry. Therefore, throughout time, different variations of pound cake appeared that are lighter, moister, and more preferred by cooks. Now, depending on the culture, the classic pound cake may contain liquids and even baking powder.
