I feel sort of sorry for Hawaii. Sure they have perfect weather, breathtaking beaches, gorgeous wildlife, and all that, but they get a bit stereotyped when it comes to food being called Hawaiian. That usually means ham and pineapple, am I right? I’m pretty sure Hawaii has a lot of authentic foods that don’t involve pineapple or ham, but we’re really focused on the pork and pineapple here in the rest of the US/world.
I’d like to tell you that today I’m going to show you another side of Hawaiian recipes with this pasta salad, but I’m totally not. I haven’t even been to Hawaii, so what do I know about it?! This Hawaiian pasta salad recipe is tossed with a creamy teriyaki base and contains ham, mandarin orange slices, and, you guessed it, pineapple! It has a really fun and unique flavor that will add some pizazz to your next grill out!

- 12 ounces uncooked pasta
- 1/2 cup teriyaki sauce
- 1/4 cup reduced-fat mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons sliced chives (OK to substitute green onions or dried chives)
- 11 ounces canned mandarin orange slices (in light syrup) drained
- 20 ounces canned pineapple chunks or tidbits (in juice) drained
- 6 ounces deli-sliced ham chopped
Heat a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Cook pasta according to package directions. Drain and rinse with cold water.
Meanwhile, in a large bowl stir together teriyaki sauce and mayo. Stir in chives, oranges, pineapple, and ham.
Add cooked pasta, and stir until well coated. Serve immediately or store in refrigerator until ready to serve. Best if eaten within 48 hours.
