BROWN SUGAR MILK TEA WITH BOBA RECIPE

WHAT IS BROWN SUGAR MILK TEA?

This bubble tea variant has no tea in it, just fresh milk, brown sugar syrup, and boba. The Tapioca pearls are cooked and then just added in a tall glass with the brown sugar syrup and cold milk. This milk tea recipe finds its origins in Taiwan and is popular for its freshness and Tiger stripes effect.

WHAT DOES BROWN SUGAR BROWN SUGAR BOBA MILK TASTE LIKE?

As its ingredients are milk, brown sugar syrup, and tapioca pearls, this drink is quite sweet but still refreshing. Using low-fat milk and a lot of ice cubes, I try to keep it a fresh drink. Also, when I prepare the sugar syrup, I like to add some cinnamon sticks for an extra flavor.

WHY I LOVE THIS BOBA TEA RECIPE?

First of all, I love this recipe because every ingredient is affordable and easy to find in every supermarket, and the steps are easy to follow. The only ingredient that can require a bit of searching is the boba, which is pretty easy to find at any Asian supermarket or online. After you find Tapioca pearls, you need only 15 minutes, and you can enjoy your Tiger Boba tea.

Next, it can be a drink to impress your special guests or Instagram followers with. However, the tiger stripes effect doesn’t last long! If you want to take pictures, be ready as soon as you add the milk. Now, to be 100% honest, I didn’t feel like making my today’s milk tea photogenic. My sugar syrup was a little too runny, and I couldn’t create proper Tiger stripes. I’ll use some Internet photos to compare my final result and laugh together.

Still, don’t worry: the taste is heavenly!

BUBBLE TEA HISTORY

Bubble tea finds its roots in Taiwan in the early 1980’ at a small tea stand, and the story behind it is really interesting. Believe it or not, it all comes down to elementary school children! As in the present, they crave something sweet and refreshing after a long day at school, so many tea stands were set up near schools.

One very inspired tea business owner started adding fruit flavors to her cold tea to attract more clients. Soon, more started to improve their refreshing teas’ different flavors. However, this led to clients shaking their cold teas for a good all-around taste. Therefore, this formed bubbles in the drink, which became “Bubble Tea.”

Next, in 1986, Taiwanese artist and entrepreneur Tu Tsong He decided to add actual bubbles to the flavored cold tea.

“I was visiting the Yamuliao wet market in Tainan when I saw fenyuan [tapioca balls], a traditional snack I loved from my childhood,” recalls Tu. “I thought to myself: why don’t I add some fenyuan into my green tea.” His first bubble tea shop opened its doors for clients in October of 1986.

WHAT IS BROWN SUGAR MILK TEA MADE OF?

Heat the brown sugar and water (and the cinnamon sticks if you use some) on a pan over low to medium heat. Don’t forget to stir occasionally. To make a thin brown sugar simple syrup for sweetening your boba milk tea, heat the mixture only until the brown sugar has fully dissolved in the water.

For more steps and indications, just follow my brown sugar syrup recipe.

  • Milk: 2% milk works best. You don’t want your tea to be too fat, as it’s mainly a cold and refreshing treat. Also, you can add a dash of cream if you want your drink to be extra creamy. Replace the milk with your favorite dairy-free milk for a bubble tea that every vegan friend of yours will enjoy.
  • Quick–cooking Tapioca pearlsBoba pearls are made of tapioca starch that comes from the cassava root, and they are 100% vegan. Even though the original recipe uses black boba, unfortunately, I could only find white pearls. However, the texture and taste are similar, so use whatever type of boba you find. In addition, if you can’t find quick-cooking boba, just adapt the boiling timing to what the product’s instructions recommend.
  • Ice Cubes.
