Sweet Potato Pie FAQ
Before we start preparing the sweet potato pie, I think it’s essential to understand some things about this creamy dessert. You already know that I love to stay informed, so here are some basics about potato pie.
Why Do You Put Eggs in Sweet Potato Pie?
Well, traditional sweet potato pie has a custard filling, meaning that the filling relies on eggs (particularly yolks) to bind the ingredients together. So, when adapting the traditional recipe to my preferences including a more affordable ingredient list, I did not cut the eggs out. Also, make sure to allow the eggs to come to room temperature before incorporating them into the mixture – one of the greatest pieces of advice I received from my mom.
Can you Freeze Sweet Potato Pie?
Yes, you can freeze sweet potato pie. However, take into consideration that the texture may change slightly.
So, if you decide to store your sweet potato pie in the freezer, allow it to completely cool, and tightly wrap it in a few layers of plastic wrap. Then, wrap in aluminum foil or place in an airtight freezer container. You can freeze this dish for up to three months. Also, in order to thaw the pie, place it in the refrigerator overnight.
Can you Reheat the Pie?
If you want to reheat it directly from the freezer, place the frozen sweet potato pie on a baking sheet and heat it at 300° for 40-50 minutes.
If your sweet potato pie has thawed from being frozen in your refrigerator, place the chilled sweet potato pie on the baking sheet and bake at 300° for less time, about 30 minutes.
However, in both cases, insert the tip of a knife into the center of the pie to see if the filling has warmed up completely.
How to Make Sweet Potato Pie for Thanksgiving
Now, that you know a little more about the sweet potato pie storing process, it’s time to learn how to actually prepare this traditional Thanksgiving dessert.
Ingredient List
First of all, here are the ingredients you’ll need in order to make this delicious and creamy sweet potato pie. When I first made this recipe using my mother’s old cooking book, I adapted a little the ingredient list in order to make it more affordable. 1/2 cup butter (softened);
1/2 cup white granulated sugar;
2 large eggs (at room temperature);
3/4 cup milk;
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon;
1 teaspoon vanilla extract;

1 big unbaked pie crust (or 6 medium ones).
Step-by-Step Recipe with Easy Instructions
Now that we know what we need, it’s time to get to work! One first piece of advice I have for you, my loves, is to thoroughly read the steps one time before starting. This is one great suggestion my father once gave me. Patience and research are key in cooking, too.
Good! Now that everything is set let’s rock this sweet potato pie recipe.
Preheat oven to 425° F and prepare a baking pan for pies.
Next, place sweet potatoes (peeled and cubed) in a medium saucepan and add water to cover. Then, just bring it to a boil. Reduce heat and cook them, uncovered, until tender, 20-25 minutes.
Drain potatoes and discard them in a large bowl. Mash until very smooth (use a hand mixer to be more efficient) and let them cool to room temperature.
Then, just add butter and mix with an electric mixer until well combined.
Add sugar, milk, eggs, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and salt; beat on medium speed until the mixture is smooth.
Place the pie crust in the prepared baking pan and add sweet potato filling.
Next, bake in the preheated oven until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean, approximately 40 minutes.
Finally, remove from the oven and let cool before serving.
*Pie will be puffed up like a soufflé when you remove it from the oven but will deflate as it cools.
**I decorated my pie with some pecan nuts for a more pleasant look. Also, you can mix some heavy cream with powdered sugar to create a nice and fluffy cream to use for decorating.
