Thank you to Safeway for sponsoring today’s recipe. Sure, this non-dairy blueberry milkshake is good for the environment and your body, but more importantly, it tastes incredible!
Earth Month is here, and it’s a good time to think about what we can do to help keep our environment healthy. Of course, making changes one month a year isn’t enough, but I like to use Earth Month as a reminder to look at my habits to see what environmentally-friendly changes I can make all year long.
Usually, when I think of helping the environment, I think about things like driving less, recycling, and conserving water. These are all important choices, but do you ever think about how the foods you choose can have an impact on the environment as well? I touched on this a while ago when I talked about watching Cowspiracy, but today I want to tell you how choosing organic, non-dairy, and/or non-GMO products can make a difference for the health of you and the planet.
As if helping the environment isn’t incentive enough to think about what you’re putting in your shopping cart, Safeway is rewarding shoppers for making good choices with their Every Cart Counts giveaway! Click here to read all the details and find the participating brands and products.
Check out these facts about some of the program’s sponsors:
- Earthbound Farm was founded over 30 years ago on a backyard garden in Carmel Valley with a commitment to farm organically. They currently have almost 50,000 acres of certified organic farmland, where they practice sustainably farming and keep synthetic chemicals out of the environment.
- Producing a half gallon of Silk’s plant-based beverages requires on average 77 percent less water than producing the same amount on conventional dairy milk
- Silk and So Delicious products are all enrolled in or verified by the Non GMO Project’s Product Verification Program (PVP).
- Horizon was founded more than 20 years ago, their founders helped pioneer the organic dairy movement and became the first company to supply organic milk nationwide. They believe in bringing the very best organic ingredients, which is why they offer Certified Organic and Made with Organic products.
Now that I told you what kind of earth-friendly products to look for, let’s see a scrumptious way to turn some of them into a non dairy dessert! Look at this luscious, creamy blueberry milkshake. It contains no dairy milk, but it tastes at least as good as its conventional counterpart. I made it with So Delicious coconut milk ice cream, Earthbound Farms organic frozen blueberries, and Silk almond milk.
Want to enjoy your milkshake for breakfast? I can tell you how! Swap the ice cream with Silk or So Delicious yogurt alternative. Add a few ice cubes, throw in a handful of Earthbound Farms baby spinach leaves, and add Vega vanilla protein powder, That’s a breakfast of champions right there, and it tastes like dessert!
This milkshake is seriously amazing. I always swoon for coconut, so I think I might like So Delicious coconut “ice cream” even better than dairy ice cream. It comes in lots of flavors too, so you can play around with the recipe to make different variations.
